Good morning,
My time on the On Deck Writer’s Fellowship has come to end. And it has been a fulfilling experience. I’ve had the fortune of speaking to so many people from different locations with different personal backgrounds. And to celebrate the end, in my recommendations I’m including pieces by some of the friends I’ve made during my ODW journey. For ODW3, I wrote a long-form piece about Robber Barons, and if you haven’t already read it, you can read it here.
No musing from me this week. It’s been a long and busy one, and with the Euro kicking off, I’m continuing to enjoy it with friends. I hope you have an excellent week. 🦁🦁🦁
This week on Future Talk, Sam and I discuss DeFi. In-person. This episode was the second and last that we recorded while together in person.
You can listen later this week on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts and more.
👷♂️🧠 A Project of One’s Own - Paul Graham. Paul uses an anecdote of his son’s enthusiasm for writing a story to discuss projects and work. I resonated with this piece because I enjoy work. But when it’s my venture, I can, as he describes, “skate” instead of “walk”. He also perfectly puts the issues with the education system:
“It's a bit sad to think of all the high school kids turning their backs on building treehouses and sitting in class dutifully learning about Darwin or Newton to pass some exam, when the work that made Darwin and Newton famous was actually closer in spirit to building treehouses than studying for exams.”
🦟😷 Mosquito Hack Cuts Dengue by 77% - BBC News. Great news from the New England Journal of Medicine. By infecting mosquito with Wolbachia, a bacteria, the dengue virus struggles to replicate inside it. There are 400m dengue infections annually. One strain typically infects people and they build resilience to it. But they become susceptible and more likely to die from a second infection, so vaccinations aren’t the answer. This research is another example of how this decade will be groundbreaking scientifically.
💭🇺🇸 From Living on Benefits to the American Dream - Secret Leaders. I’ve recently discovered the Secret Leaders podcast, which focuses on British entrepreneurs. Harry Hurst cofounded Pipe, the fastest FinTech to reach a $2b valuation in history. His story is inspirational, and anyone interested in founding a start-up should give it a listen.
💸🛁 The Money Bubble Never Pops - Manish Galvani. Manish went on a journey during ODW3 to better understand blockchain and cryptocurrency. It’s clear from this piece that he was successful. I had the fortune of speaking 1:1 with Manish, and he’s an inspiring person, so I’m very pleased to see how this piece has turned out. This is a wonderful introduction to crypto through the lens of the history of money.
👨💼🧑💻 Citizen Code - Josh Levine. During ODW3, Josh was my accountability buddy. I looked forward to every conversation with him, they were so insightful and rich. He’s also an incredible writer. I mean, amazingly talented. I’ve had the fortune of getting a sneak peek of what he’s releasing for his newsletter, and it’s a treat. If you’re interested in how technology is and will continue to shape our lives, subscribe to his newsletter.
That’s all for this week.
